Stop eating fish and chips!

Eating fish and chips just once a week could increase your risk of heart failure by almost 50 per cent, a study has found.

Researchers in the U.S. found that white fish - including cod and sole - were among the least effective at reducing heart risks.

And frying the fish not only cancelled out any beneficial effects, but could even reverse them.

If they also fry it with seed oil...

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are both types of polyunsaturated fats that play crucial roles in our body. They are termed "essential" because our bodies cannot produce them, so we must obtain them from our diet.

The balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is important for several reasons. Both types of fats compete for the same enzymes in our body, which are needed to convert the fats into forms our bodies can use. Therefore, the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 in our diet can influence how our bodies respond to inflammation, blood clotting, and cell proliferation.

Historically, human diets probably had a ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fats close to 1:1. However, with the modern Western diet, this ratio has shifted dramatically, now estimated to be around 15:1 to 20:1 in favor of Omega-6 fats. This is largely due to an increased intake of Omega-6-rich foods, such as vegetable oils, poultry, and certain types of nuts and seeds, and a decreased intake of Omega-3-rich foods like fatty fish and flaxseeds.

This imbalance is thought to promote the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, whereas increased levels of Omega-3 (a low Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio) exert suppressive effects.

So, how can we achieve a better balance of these fats in our diet?

1. **Increase Omega-3 Intake**: Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and certain types of algae. Aim to include these in your diet regularly.

2. **Decrease Omega-6 Intake**: While Omega-6 fatty acids are essential, most people consume more than they need. Limit your intake of vegetable oils like sunflower, corn, and soybean oil, and opt for oils with a better balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6, like olive oil. Also, limit processed and fried foods, which often contain high levels of Omega-6 fats.

3. **Consider Supplements**: If you find it challenging to get enough Omega-3 from your diet, consider a high-quality supplement. Fish oil and algae oil supplements are good options.

4. **Balanced Diet**: Overall, aim for a diet that includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. This will help ensure you get a balance of all the essential fats, as well as other important nutrients.

Remember, it's not just about increasing Omega-3 intake but also about balancing the intake of both types of fats. As with all things nutrition-related, it's about overall dietary patterns, not just one single nutrient.

As always, before making any major changes to your diet, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and health goals.

Do you know what I have eaten today: Grilled fresh hake tail, accompanied by a garlic, parsley, olive oil and lemon sauce.

I am also a great consumer of oily fish

Now is the season for sardines, anchovies and mussels

That sounds delicious, José. I enjoy a lot of olive oil too, but today I have decided to leave it off the menu and just have some butter and double cream with my food. Perfect for a cold wet summer's day in Fishguard. It's been quite high Keto for the last two weeks, but really I'm not imposing any constraints on my diet. I'll eat whatever my lower gut desires, since that is the organ that needs fixing right now.

I very rarely eat fish and chips. In Glasgow where lifespans are among the shortest in Europe, they have further refined the delicacy of fish and chips by substituting mars bars for the fish. - Mars bars dipped in batter and deep-fried in oil. The pleasures are short-lived.

And I thought that Jamie Oliver's paella with chorizo was the maximum possible aberration. How wrong I was...

You Brits are definitely not cut out for cooking.

Jamie Oliver's "paella" with chorizo and peas:

To cook well, it is essential to know which foods go together.

It's easy to make simple dishes that are delicious.

For example, the Valencian esgarraet, widely consumed in summer. It is made with roasted red peppers, desalted cod, garlic and olive oil.

I'm trying to calm the gut and I believe the raw sprout soup might have the opposite effect at this time. The Jamie Oliver dishes also look a bit hazardous to me, but I will gladly sample one of José's dishes (small virtual helping please)
