To lie or not to lie, that is my question

In the last two days I have learned something unexpected. At school we were told that the eighth commandment forbids lying. However, a closer look at the interpretations of the ten commandments shows that this is not necessarily  the case. A simple lie followed by, for example,. "believe me" could be permissible, lying in court under oath would be a criminal offence. In a CNN broadcast about the indictments against the former president, a defense lawyer referred to the First Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech.

Fortunately, in the past the Court has decided which words and actions are allowed and which are not.
Unfortunately, half of the population does not care.
Or does it still matter? After all, it is not just US democracy that is at stake. I suspect that there are similar problems in some other European countries too.

It is an exciting time. And it is not clear what will happen in the future.
